I’m BEKZIN, an Asian. Immigrant. Queer. I was not born
with these labels, rather they were given to me as a foreign national. Having
my identity defined, experiencing society as a designated minority, were once
alien concepts but now experiences I am having more than ever.
My Chosen name BEKZIN is a name that sounds like my given
name but represents none of my given identity. BEKZIN is a blank label that I
can fill in by myself and my work is like that too. I use images that have intimate personal
meaning and depict them through my own view. By creating a gap between the
image's common meaning and how it is conveyed in my work, there is room for the
someone else's own story. Creating the gap is what I am doing now and what I
will be doing for a while.
